Are you an investor or entrepreneur who want to start a business but you are somehow confused on where to put your resources? Then here are the five most lucrative areas of investment in Sierra Leone. The part one (1) of this article is focusing on the top five (5) big investment areas to  invest that will yield billions in no time. There are many areas to start an investment in Sierra Leone and you will be a billionaire in few years, but based on these factors like:

  • The demand of the consumers
  • The competition (the less the competition the higher your chances of making more money)
  • Will of government (this concerns legality and how fast the government will approve your business. For instance drugs trafficking and cultivation of marijuana is more lucrative and it makes money faster but however is illegal)
  • Cost ( this includes cost of production and the capital needed to the start )

I have selected the best five (5) that even the government will help you with loan and subside in case you run out of cash.

From the bottom unto the top here are the best five areas of investment in Sierra Leone

#5 SPORT AND ENTERTAINMENT

Apart from the fame and women there is also a lucrative business attached to it. Sport and entertainment have emerged as a lucrative field for the past couple of decades and this have attracted some huge investment. For the sake of this article I will focus my attention on football whenever I measure sport.

In terms of demand football is the most celebrated sport in the nation and it has produced some of the largest crowds in the country. After almost 5 years without the national premier league as a result of Ebola and other political reasons the league finally returns in 2018 with a different momentum. A nation with more than 80% of the youth love football and they can do anything possible to watch the beautiful game.  In 2018/2019 Sierra Leone premier league season the match between the league leaders Eastern End Lions Football club and 2nd place Kallon football club produced the largest crowd ever in Sierra Leone football. The crowd was huge to the extent  some spectators were forcedly removed out of the stadium (Siaka Stevens’ Stadium) for the start of the match. Investing in football in Sierra Leone is not a bad deal at all. As a deprive sector with less investors and less competition increase your chances of making your billions. Other investors who are making a differences in this  sector are; Mr. Mohamed Kallon (CEO FC Kallon), Madam Isha Johansen (Owner FC. Johansen and President of SLFA) and Edmond Michael (CEO Edmond Michael Foundation) and many others.

Moving unto music, film and fashion, this sector have faced serious challenges and still facing them. Sierra Leone entertainment industry has experienced what I called a wave movement (up and down). Sierra Leone is a nation full of talents but what we lack is the platform to showcase our talents to the world this has contributed to the present state of the nation’s entertainment. There are some many challenges pulling this industry down from piracy,  lack of good production, lack of television houses for promo, lack of arenas/theatres and cinemas.. But recently the industry has receive some face lift thanks to some individuals who have come in to help boost the sector thanks to likes of the Africa Young Voices (AYV), Kabaka Multimedia and Entertainment (KME) and the Nation Entertainment Award (NEA) with the contributions of some entertainers who have realized that what the likes of the Nigerians and Ghanaians are doing they can do better (eg. Kao Denero).

Fashion and designed is another aspect in the entertainment industry that can produce billions if properly invested into. . This area has attracted many young people in Sierra Leone and is one of the most popular areas of entertainment. Fashion and designing contest is organized almost in all the local communities in Sierra Leone and the biggest one being the Miss Sierra Leone. But however there is no textile company in Sierra Leone as compared to Ghana (GTP New Style etc.) or Nigeria (United Nigeria textiles plc. Da Viva Fashion etc.).

In the area of film, Sierra Leone is home to some of the best story tellers and screen players in Africa. But however the movie industry has not lived up to exception with poor production and logistics this has rendered dissatisfaction from citizens and movie lovers.

With all these challenges, choosing this sector to invest will make you a billionaire in no time. Either by buying a football club or starting your own, or just buying a share in any of the top football clubs will make your dream of becoming a billionaire come true. Or you can decide to build a hall of any capacity in Sierra Leone, starting your own record label or movie production, or let say you open your own fashion designing company or boutique will make you the most popular man in Sierra Leone.

#4 petroleum

Number four (4) on my list is petroleum, this sector is refers to as a win or win business sector. In terms of demand, petroleum is one of the most used products in the world and also very competitive. But despite being very competitive, is also one of the simplest business you can start if you already have land near any street or express road. Starting a filling station in Sierra Leone is very simple and it is the fastest way to make money in Sierra Leone, all you need for you to start is a legally owned land expose to the street, from there you can choose to work with any of the major petroleum companies (TOTAL, NP etc.)  and they will do the rest for you depending on the contract. If you are looking for investment areas in Sierra Leone that will bring you fast money then petroleum is just the perfect area for you.

#3 HOUSING- REAL ESTATE

Housing is a major problem in Sierra Leone especially in urban areas. Freetown, Bo, Waterloo, kenema, Koidu and Makeni are the most populated cities in the country. The government of Sierra Leone does not prioritize housing at all despite almost 10% of Freetownians live in slums or disaster prone areas (almost every year Freetown experiences flooding and displaces over 5000 people annually). According to 2015 housing and population census show that only 20% of the country’s population live in flat/apartment. The 2015 census showed more than 2.5 million Sierra Leoneans live in urban areas and many of these people resides in family houses/compounds or make shift buildings (pan bodi) which are usually over crowded. Obtaining a flat in Freetown (the country’s biggest and most populated city) is very expensive and very competitive. A normal 3 bedrooms flat cost about 10 million Leones ($ 1000) for a year. Depending on the location of the house (for e.g. western part of Freetown) a normal flat can cost up to $5,000 a year. Real estate housing is not common in Sierra Leone, so investing in this sector is less competitive with high demand and will make you a billionaire in no time. If you are looking for life time investment that will not only make you a billionaire but even your grand children then choose to invest in housing in Sierra Leone.

#2 TRANSPORTATION (land)

Transportation is one of the most lucrative areas of investment in Sierra Leone. The movement of people, goods and services is vital for the booming of any country’s economy and Sierra Leone is one of these country with dare in need of improvement in the transportation sector. As small as Sierra Leone is with a total land area of 71,740km2 has still being struggling to combat the demand of passengers moving across the country. Land transportation is the main form of movement (if not the only) of people moving from one location to the other within the country  with three major express roads to serve almost all major cities and towns across the country and one major road leading to the capital city Freetown.

To solve the problem of Sierra Leone transportation is simple, as a result of the fact that almost all the major towns lies on one route which means one bus can serve more than one city at a time, for instance a bus moving from Freetown to Kenema City can also serves passengers heading to Yoni and Bo city at the same time.

The major transportation providers is the Sierra Leone road transport cooperation (SLRTC). This sector is less competitive and is highly demanded almost every day travelers are stranded as a result of inadequate vehicles and buses to transport them to their destinations. Despite there has being some other transportation companies like Ali Abess transport and Merlian tours but yet still transportation is a huge problem which needs to be address immediately and so you might just be that investor/company to the salvage this long serving problem. Take a chance to invest in transportation in Sierra Leone because your chances of succeeding and becoming a billionaire is great.

#1 AGRICULTURE

At number one is the sector which has employed the highest number of Sierra Leoneans, agriculture. According to 2015 housing and population census, agriculture employed 59.2% of Sierra Leone population and is contributing more than 50% of the nation’s GDP (gross domestic products). Rice is the stable food of all Sierra Leoneans and almost 98% of Sierra Leoneans eat rice every day. But sadly with all these percentages Sierra Leone is unable to feed her citizens, so the nation depends on imported food for consumption even the staple food with other products like chicken, eggs, onions and many other consumable products are all imported into the country. Due to the lack of food, in 2017 Sierra Leone was ranked 3rd hungriest nation in the world according to the global hunger index above Chad and the Central African Republic. Until date Sierra Leone has no mechanized farm to produce rice in large scale not even from any private sector. And these have rendered the cost of living very expensive for the ordinary citizens.

With this little statistics above you can agree with me that an investment in any aspect of agriculture is a win or win situation. Either be it rice farming, animal farming or cash crop production you will stand nothing to lose at all. Also fruit production and preservation is not common in Sierra Leone fruits are only available in their season of harvest for instance mango, after the period of April, May and June mango disappears totally from the market. If you can choose to make mango or any other fruit or vegetable like cucumber to be available to the market throughout the year either by preservation or farming yourself you will be a billionaire in no time.

Watch out for the part two (2) of this article which will focus on the middle scale businesses you can start in Sierra Leone that will make you a millionaire.

    1. Of Cause. You need to have a good sales person who understands pricing. It’s one of the businesses that has 100% return. No matter how much you spend on it to bring them in S/Leone you still get huge return. But focus the size, there certain sizes of grade A used tyres even if you bring them in huge amount or even more than 10 containers will take you short time to sell them and at good price, cause the demand for them is high.
